Thanks to Toyota's supply arrangements, some of the Corollas that landed here (and all of the Sportivos) were built in South Africa, while the rest were built in Japan. To list which batches were from where in a volume seller like the Corolla would take pages, but you can work it out for yourself if the car's country of origin matters to you in the first place. The rest of the range kicked off with the entry-level Ascent then moved through the Conquest, Levin and Ultima. They all used a 100kW, 1.8-litre engine with a choice of either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic which, even back then, seemed at least a ratio short. The Corolla got an all-new body for the 2001 model-year and it's the now familiar, slightly dumpy look that featured Toyota's then-new cab-forward styling cues. But while it mightn't be destined for the catwalk, the overall proportions did provide plenty of interior space and the five-door hatchback body has kind of grown on us over the years. When you throw in the fact that any 15-year-old hatchback or small sedan is going to be around for pocket-money, you can see where this argument is going.
With that in mind, a Corolla's age and kilometres are less critical than they can be for most other second-hand small cars out there, and that means a Corolla that's already 15 years-old can still be a viable choice.
